About Liposuction and Fat Grafting

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes stubborn deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, neck, and flanks. Liposuction is not a weight loss tool, but rather a method of sculpting the body to enhance natural contours.

The procedure involves the use of a thin tube (cannula) inserted through small incisions to suction out fat using a vacuum system. Liposuction has evolved from early techniques, with adjuncts such as power- laser- or ultrasound-assisted liposuction delivering improved precision, reduced bruising, and faster recovery. Liposuction is frequently combined with other procedures such as abdominoplasty or body lift surgeries. Recovery is typically smooth, and results become more visible as swelling subsides. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, the effects of liposuction are long-lasting and can significantly enhance body shape and proportion.

Tissue removed during liposuction may also be processed and re-injected (fat grafting).  This provides a permanent tissue filler, which is made of the individual’s own cells.  Fat grafting is a useful technique to augment tissue volume and reverse age-related descent in various areas such as the face, hips and buttocks.
