About Facelift
As we age, facial tissues lose elasticity and volume. The tissues respond to gravity by descending, while over-use of facial muscles may result in development of wrinkles (rhytids). This leads to a tired, drawn, or aged appearance. A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the mid and lower face by tightening sagging skin, repositioning underlying tissues, and reducing deep lines and jowls. A facelift can restore a more youthful contour while maintaining natural facial expression.
The procedure involves lifting the skin and tightening the deeper layers of the face (SMAS), with careful re-draping of skin to avoid an over-pulled look. Fat grafting may also be used to restore volume. Incisions are typically placed around the ears and along the hairline to conceal scars. Recovery varies depending on the extent of surgery, but most patients can expect a refreshed, more defined appearance that lasts many years. A facelift can be performed alone or combined with other procedures such as eyelid surgery, necklift, or browlift for a comprehensive result.
